My story
From the age of thirteen and for most of adult life, I suffered from IBS, that frustrating catch all diagnosis. My attacks came on without warning or apparent reason and left me completely drained. To control the symptoms, the gastroenterologist gave me ongoing prescriptions for an antispasmodic and a narcotic pain killer. I never left home without them and I always made sure to scope out where the bathroom was.
In the fall of 2016, my attacks were no longer only a handful of times a month. Every day, I had nausea, bloating, flatulence, stomach pain, heartburn, cramping, pretty much every unwanted GI symptom. I was losing weight and was fearful of eating. It took over two years of research, extensive medical tests, seeing multiple specialists and trying different diets before I stumbled upon SIBO (small intestine bacteria overgrowth). With the help of my naturopath, we secured a test kit. The result was positive. I did several rounds of treatment including diet, prescriptions and supplements and after a couple of months I was hopeful about the future.
Now in 2023, I feel the best I can ever remember feeling in my whole life. I haven't had an IBS attack in over four years and I don't need any prescriptions. Nutrition was a big piece of my healing journey and I wanted to learn more. I started working towards my nutrition and health coach diploma solely for personal reason but now I want to share my knowledge with others.
